What You'll Learn
The PG279QZ is a minor revision of the PG279Q
The PG279QZ is very similar to the older PG279Q in design, with the only difference being a slight change in measurements. The newer model is lighter than the older one. The PG279QZ has a matte black chassis that’s nice to the touch and is easy to maintain since the surface doesn’t retain smudges. The PG279QZ has a limited I/O layout that includes DisplayPort 1.2 and a secondary HDMI 1.4 slot for inputs, along with two USB 3.0 slots for peripherals. The PG279QZ has a very reasonable price that would tempt a lot of gamers.
The PG279QZ has a few improvements over its predecessor. It is less prone to backlight bleeding and has a better contrast ratio. The newer model also has a lower input lag of 4.3ms compared to the PG279Q's 60Hz input lag. The PG279QZ has excellent ergonomics, with a stand that allows users to adjust the height, tilt, swivel, and pivot the screen. The monitor has a familiar and widely preferred aesthetic, with a squarish base that provides excellent stability.

The PG279QM is the direct successor to the PG279Q
The PG279QM is a 27-inch QHD/IPS gaming monitor with 240Hz, Rec.2020 colour, HDR, Adaptive-Sync, and fantastic performance. It is one of the best gaming monitors I've reviewed and one of the best all-around displays too. With perfect video processing, smooth gaming performance, and tons of rich and accurate colour. It has a huge colour gamut with selectable modes, accurate out-of-the-box, faultless video processing, and premium build quality.
The PG279QM has a rugged build quality and is made to last with a solid stand, flex-free chassis, and large control buttons that offer a firm feel. It has LED lighting in the back with a large ROG logo that lights up in all colours of the rainbow. It also has Aura Sync, which means the monitor can flash, breathe, and dazzle along with the other Asus ROG components in your PC.
The PG279QM has a thin 8mm bezel around the top and sides and a 21mm strip across the bottom featuring the ROG logo in a shiny metallic finish. The power LED is barely visible at the lower right. You'll find the large control buttons and the OSD joystick around the back. The base mimics the styling of all ROG monitors in recent memory with a twist, wide-set legs, and copper-coloured trim.
The PG279QM's side profile shows a very rounded shape with no attempt made at thinness. The panel is deeper than most, at around 3.5 inches. The stand is rock solid with full ergonomic features. A 100mm height adjustment is accompanied by 5/20 degrees tilt and 25 degrees swivel to either side. You can also rotate the panel 90 degrees to portrait mode.
The PG279QM has a single DisplayPort 1.4 that works up to 240Hz with HDR, G-Sync, and 8-bit colour. Three HDMI 2.0 ports operate up to 144Hz. There are three USB 3.0 ports, one upstream and two down. The PG279QM also has two-watt integrated speakers or a 3.5mm jack for headphones.
The PG279QM has a full-featured OSD with eight sub-menus. Every conceivable gaming feature and image adjustment is included. It has a three-level overdrive, GamePlus play aids, six game-specific picture modes, and a Dark Boost feature. It increases black levels to make shadow detail clearer. The overdrive is very effective and can be used on its highest setting without ghosting.

The PG279Q has a variable refresh rate
The PG279Q has been replaced by the PG279QM, which has a higher refresh rate and improved response time. The newer model also supports HDR, which the PG279Q does not.
The PG279Q's refresh rate can be overclocked directly from the OSD. It has an excellent native refresh rate, and an even better response time at 60Hz. The Normal overdrive setting is the most balanced and provides the best response time with just a bit of overshoot. The Extreme option is a bit faster, but it adds some terrible overshoot, so it is not recommended.
The PG279Q has an optional black frame insertion feature, which can be used to help improve the appearance of motion. This can be activated using NVIDIA's ULMB feature. This matches the input rate by introducing flicker, which may reduce the perceived brightness of the screen.
The PG279Q has a simple design and good build quality. The stand is plain but supports the display well and has great ergonomics. The base of the monitor can light up with red LEDs. The back of the monitor is plain, with a simple design and no RGB bias lighting. There is a space within the stand that can be used for cable management. The borders are thin on three sides, but there is a gap between the bezels and the actual screen.
The PG279Q is thicker than most similar models, so it takes up a bit more space when not VESA mounted. It is mostly plastic but feels very solid. The PG279Q's stand is simple and supports the monitor well, although it will wobble slightly if knocked.

The PG279Q has a native resolution of 2560 x 1440
The ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q is a 27-inch monitor with a native resolution of 2560 x 1440. This resolution, also known as WQHD, offers four times the resolution of 720p and provides 77% more onscreen desktop space than standard Full HD displays. This extra space and detail can give you a major in-game advantage.
The monitor's IPS panel displays the full sRGB gamut, resulting in immersive life-like colour in games, movies, and design work. The wide viewing angles of 178 degrees ensure minimal distortion and colour shift even when viewing from extreme positions. The monitor's high resolution is also great for office work, allowing you to open multiple windows side-by-side.
The PG279Q's 165Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur, giving you an advantage in first-person shooters, racing games, real-time strategy, and sports titles. The monitor also incorporates NVIDIA G-SYNC technology, which synchronises the display's refresh rate to the GPU in your GeForce GTX-powered PC, eliminating screen tearing and minimising display stutter and input lag.
The PG279Q has been replaced by the PG279QM and PG279QZ models, which offer higher refresh rates and improved response times. However, the PG279Q remains a solid choice for gaming and general use, especially if you can find it at a discounted price.
