Canon's RF mount was first introduced in 2018 with the EOS R, the first of Canon's mirrorless EOS R System cameras. The RF mount is designed to enable a new generation of optical technology and creative possibilities. All EOS R System cameras have the same RF mount, and all RF and RF-S lenses can be used on all EOS R System cameras. This includes the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, Canon EOS R6 Mark II, Canon EOS C70 Cinema Camera, and more.
The RF mount has a large 54mm diameter, which is the same as the EF mount, but with a reduced back focus distance – the distance between the mount and the sensor – from 44mm to 20mm. This reduction in back focus distance allows for lens designs with no performance compromises, and lenses can be made more compact and lightweight than their EF mount equivalents.
Canon EF lenses can be used on an RF mount camera with the use of an adapter, such as the EF-EOS R Mount Adapter. However, Canon RF lenses are not compatible with Canon EF-mount DSLRs, and there is no adapter available to make them compatible.

The RF mount is also compatible with Canon's EOS R system, which includes the EOS R, RP, R1, R3, R5, R6, R7, R8, R10, R50, and R100 series cameras. The RF mount was first introduced in September 2018 with the EOS R camera and was designed for Canon's full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras.
The RF mount offers several advantages over the previous EF mount, including a shorter flange focal distance, which allows for more compact lens designs, and a larger diameter, which enables larger aperture lenses and improved image quality. The RF mount also features improved communication between the camera and lens, with a 12-pin connection that enables faster data transfer and enhanced autofocus performance.
Canon has released a range of RF lenses, including prime and zoom lenses, as well as lenses specifically designed for APS-C sensors, known as RF-S lenses. These lenses can be used on both full-frame and APS-C EOS R system cameras, with the camera automatically switching to crop mode when an RF-S lens is attached.
Additionally, Canon offers a range of lens adapters that allow EF and EF-S lenses to be used on RF-mount cameras. However, it is important to note that RF lenses are not compatible with EF-mount DSLR cameras and cannot be adapted for use with them.

Frequently asked questions
The RF mount is the lens mount for Canon's EOS R System, which enables much faster communication and a wider bandwidth between the camera and lens. The RF mount has a 12-pin connection, a 50% increase from the 8 pins on the EF mount.
RF lenses are compatible with all EOS R System cameras, including the EOS R, RP, R1, R3, R5, R6, R7, R8, R10, and R100.
No, RF lenses are not compatible with EF-mount cameras. However, you can use EF lenses on RF-mount cameras with an adapter.
RF lenses are designed for full-frame sensor cameras, while RF-S lenses are designed for APS-C sensor cameras. RF-S lenses can be used on full-frame RF cameras, but the image will be cropped.
Yes, third-party lens manufacturers such as Sigma and Tamron have started releasing RF-S lenses for APS-C sensor cameras. Fully manual RF lenses from companies like Laowa are also available.
